I have been there and done that, over and over, for so many years. Throughout my 25-year nursing career, I was 50 to 100lbs overweight. I knew better but I was never able to do better. My feet hurt. My knees ached. And my back was so sore after those long shifts. I spent years believing something was wrong with me. Why couldn’t I just stick to ‘it’? -whatever the ‘it’ was at the time. Why couldn’t I just figure this out? What was wrong with me? What was I missing? What was I not getting? I had all this knowledge, yet I didn’t apply it. I knew the effects of obesity, but it wasn’t enough to get me to lose the weight. Even seeing hundreds of my patients suffer from those dreadful effects wasn’t enough. Why if I wanted it so bad, couldn’t I just stop overeating? Sure, occasionally I managed to ‘get it together’ long enough to lose 10, 25 and once even 50 lbs. but the weight always came back. What was wrong with me?
